Most air conditioning systems have a lifespan of between 10-18 years, after which costly breakdowns occur frequently. It’s important to know that living in an area closer to the salt water, like we do, can decrease the life span of a unit to by 5 to 8 years. If your air conditioner is 12+ years old and your heat pump is 8+ years old, they are nearing the end of their lifespans. (If they have been serviced and maintained regularly, they may last an additional 3- 4 years.) If your unit is nearing the end of its lifespan, you should definitely consider a replacement system.
Efficiency requirements imposed by the government and improvements made by the HVAC industry have made new air conditioning systems much more efficient than units that are 10-20 years old. Repairing an older unit may restore it to the energy efficiency that it had, but that does not compare favorably to the efficiency of newer units. The energy savings gained with a new unit will pay for the difference between the cost of frequent repairs and buying new in a relatively short period of time.
St Johns Heating and Air experts can examine the efficiency of the thermal envelope (walls, windows, doors, floors, ceiling, etc.) of your home and determine the proper air conditioning system needed to cool your home and maintain a stable, comfortable indoor environment. Proper installation of an air conditioning system is very important since an improperly installed HVAC system can reduce its efficiency by as much as 30% (according to energystar.gov).
